CALLANDS residents had to be evacuated in the early hours of Friday after a suspicious parcel was dumped outside a house on Colwyn Close.

Police and Army officials are investigating the incident after a woman found the package in her driveway. The brown cardboard package was dumped between 8.40pm and 11.10pm on Thursday.

Police and Army bomb disposal teams were called to the scene and firefighters and paramedics were put on stand-by while 38 residents were evacuated.

Experts from the Army bomb disposal team carried out a controlled explosion at 1.30am and residents were allowed to go back to their homes.

The package has been taken away by Army experts for a detailed forensic examination.
