COMMUNITY spirit is alive and kicking in Dallam, with both young and old looking forward to an action-packed youth festival taking place throughout the Bank Holiday weekend.

The event, based at Harrison Square, has been organised by volunteers from Dallam's senior youth club and by young people themselves.

It is designed to promote the positive image of youth and bring the people of Dallam together to enjoy themselves.

Residents can have a go at line dancing, body art and face painting, mosaic making, mural painting, or simply watch the entertainment provided by local dance and music groups.

The action kicks off at midday on Saturday with an official opening by Warrington's Mayor, Clr Sheila Woodyatt.

After last year's success story - when the first festival was held - volunteers from Dallam's senior youth club now hope to make it an annual event.

"We want to promote the positive side of being a young person. It is about bringing young and old together," said organiser Sue Emery.

"Last year Dallam's elderly people sat on the benches thoroughly enjoying the event. They tend to forget how sometimes they are scared to cross the square at night."

But Sue says the event is also about highlighting the community of Dallam in general, helping to promote a positive image and to attract more businesses and organisations into the area.

"Residents in Dallam have to pass Harrison Road every day. Although the square is a mess, with shops boarded up, we the people are not going to let it drive us down," she said.

"If we keep on and have one each year, it is bound to bring attention and highlight our image."

Funders of the event include Warrington Borough Council, Community Chest and the National Lottery.

Saturday's entertainment includes a Steel Tempo concert at 12.30pm, street dancing, and a performance by Dallam's own dance group, Funkey Monkeys.

On Sunday, a DJ will provide more fun and music from noon, followed by line dancing, face painting, body art and other art workshops.

Bank Holiday Monday's events include a live band at 4pm followed by a free barbecue.
