HALTON Hornets' youngsters received a boost this week after former Widnes hero Bobby Goulding agreed to help coach the u7s side.

The British international, who also played for Wigan, started his own career with the Widnes outfit after his father, ex-pro Bo, coached the club back in 1975.

And Bobby's son, Bobby junior, also plays for the u8s.

He won the player-of-the-year award last season while in the u7s - just like his famous Dad did mor ethan 20 years ago.

Bobby Snr, who is constantly linked with a move back to his home town club, will join Darren Hayes and Ste Nulty in guilding the u7s in the forthcoming season.

Meanwhile, the u8s, who recently won the Portico seven-a-side tournament beating Pilks in the final, also have an ex-rugby league star on the coaching staff in the form of ex Widnes and GB internation, Paul Hulme.

The team's head coach is coached by Dave O'Brien, assisted by his son Kevin and ex-Tigers coach Bill Mulvey.

Speaking after his side's torunament victory, Dave said: "Our coaching staff are very proud of the lads and we have the makings of a top class side in the future. Our team spirit is excellent and we are all looking forward to trhe new season."

The Hornets are still looking for new players, particularly for the u7s,u8s and u9s.

This year the club is celebrating its 25th anniversary and over the years has had a strong youth policy.

Co-founder and member, Dave Oldham, said the Hornets' policy on junior rugby has always been a prioty.

"We always take pride in ourselves," he said.

"Right through our 25 year history we have always been here for the young children of Widnes and Runcorn and our record is the best - not only in Halton but throughout the North West counties."
