A NEW £1 million pub to be built soon in Widnes was christened this week - by World readers.

Wetherspoon invited our readers to suggest names for their new development in Albert Road.

We were inundated with ideas and sent them on to the company.

This week, Wetherspoon announced the winning name - their new pub is to be called 'The Premier'

Five readers suggested this name as the site, currently occupied by D&E Motor Factors, used to be a cinema called The Premier.

Eddie Gershon of Wetherspoon said: "World readers came up with loads of suggestions. We would like to thank everyone who entered. They were all very good, some were superb. It was obvious that people had done a lot of local research."

He stressed the name was not chosen because it was the most popular.

"Wetherspoon like to name sites after historical events or buildings."

The following five readers will each receive a £75 Wetherspoon voucher within the next two weeks. They do not have to wait until the new pub opens, they can spend it at any Wetherspoon.

The winners are: Mrs Joyce Hunt of Newbarnet, Widnes; Allan Roberts of Hilary Close, Widnes; Barbara Hanrahan of Station Road, Penketh; Philip Milinger of Beaconsfield Road, Runcorn; Mrs D Littler of Birkdale Road, Widnes.

Work on the new pub is due to start mid to late September.
