Worksop Town 1

Runcorn 1

A TREMENDOUS goal by Mike Moseley and outstanding performances by Mike Tomlinson and Peter Ellis in the heart of the defence helped Runcorn to earn a valuable point at Worksop.

Ray Newlands answered an emergency call to take over in the Runcorn goal for the suspended Richard Acton, and striker Mike Heverin made his debut.

Runcorn started the game brightly and deservedly opened the scoring after 12 minutes with a superb strike from the lively Moseley, who unleashed a powerful left foot drive from the edge of the area after good work by Paul McNally and Mike Smith.

Worksop equalised six minutes later through Kirk Jackson who latched onto a centre from Steve Johnson to steer the ball past Newlands.

Runcorn nearly took the lead just before half time when an excellent cross field ball from McNally found Smith in space but his shot went into the side netting.

Runcorn created the better chances in the second half, and only a brilliant save from Worksop keeper Holmshaw prevented Moseley from increasing the scoring after another superb pass from inspirational skipper, McNally.

Chris Waddle showed flashes of brilliance for Worksop but did not see enough of the ball to create any problems for Runcorn.

The game certainly produced a contrast of styles with Worksop patiently looking for an opening whilst Runcorn adopted the more direct approach.

Both teams could have claimed all three points in the last five minutes.

Firstly, substitute Gary Townsend shot just wide when well placed, and then a minute later the Worksop defence scrambled the ball to safety when Ryan Davis cleared off the line.

A surging run from youngster John McAllister created the opportunity and both David Robinson and Moseley saw their efforts cleared.
