CHESHIRE is to have more than 60 new police officers after winning additional funding from the Home Office.

The extra money will enable the Cheshire Constabulary to recruit 11 new officers in 2001 and 50 more in the following year.

These officers will be additional to the new policing posts announced in 1999, when the government made money available for 47 extra officers this year and 39 more in 2001.

In total the force will be able to take on 147 new police officers over the three-year period.

Cheshire Police aims to recruit 93 officers in the coming months to fill the new posts and other vacancies created by the retirement of long-serving officers.
