GCSE pass rates were considerably higher than the national average as hundreds of pupils celebrated this week.

The national average of 56 per cent of GCSEs graded at A-C was topped by Sandbach School for Boys which achieved a 65 per cent rate with star pupil James Smith scoring 11 A grades and one B.

South Cheshire College had a 77 per cent pass rate and has issued an official congratulation to all of the borough's schools on the amazing pass rates achieved.

The highest figure in the borough was achieved by Sandbach High School for girls where 78 per cent hit the five or more A-C pass rate.

Head teacher, John Leigh said: "The results are stunning and I cannot speak highly enough of the dedication shown by students and their teachers. I am thrilled for them all."

Katherine Argent, Katie Brunskill, Katie Edge, Leonora Moore and Jessica Thompson all scored A and A*s in all their subjects.

Star performers Merry Bowles and Gemma Macey gained ten A* passes each.

Back in Crewe, Ruskin High School had 56 per cent of pupils gaining five or more A* to C grades.

Head Philip Mottershead said: "The fact that this success has been achieved against a background of uncertainty for Ruskin clearly indicates the quality of the individuals within it."

Victoria Community Technology School is also enjoying a record breaking year.

Head Greg Brown said: "Ninety-six per cent of pupils achieved passing grades which, considering our catchment area, is tremendous."
