THE future of Northwich's Festival of Sport has been cast into doubt - following disappointing profits at this year's event.

More than 2,000 people turned out to enjoy the non-stop Bank Holiday entertainment at Northwich Rugby Club's main fund-raiser of the year.

But despite everything going to plan, organisers of the event claim its future has been jeopardised by adults unwilling to pay the £2 admission fee on the gate.

A spokesman for Northwich RUFC said: "For some reason many people who turned up were unwilling to put their hands in their pockets in spite of the fact that our admission price has not changed for four years," he said.

"Some of the youngsters who helped out on the gate were badly treated by people who should know better.

"It's very discouraging and a shame for those who happily pay what is still a very modest charge for five hours of entertainment."

The event was a great success and included street performer Danny Zapparelli and his 10-foot unicycle show and the Cheshire Strongman Competition.

The spokesman added: "We hope that we can keep the event going, as it has a loyal and large following and we have some fantastic sponsors.

"But there are high costs to be met and the club has revenue targets that have to be achieved."
