A MULTI-million pound scheme to expand Golden Square is still on track, despite investors' threats to pull out in the wake of the Tesco/Wolves development.

Last week, Legal and General, which owns and manages the shopping arcade, said the supermarket threatened the viability of plans to bring an extra 300,00 sq ft of retail space and a state-of-the-art bus terminal to the town.

A spokesman for Legal and General warned the Development Control Committee that the compnay would consider pulling out of the project if the joint application to build a new rugby stadium and Tesco supermarket was granted.

The committee approved the Tesco scheme, but council leader John Gartside said this week that the council has since reached an understanding with the company and that the Golden Square investment remained secure.

Said Clr Gartside: "Our very friendly negotiations with Legal and General are proceeding satisfactorily. None of the major investments coming into Warrington have been particularly affected by the Tesco plan.

"All this generates more interest in Warrington and will introduce a whole range of shopping experiences. I think competition is good for Warrington shoppers."

He added: "We've kept the stadium close to the town centre and we've got to link them together. Hopefully people will go to a rugby match and do some shopping as well."
