KNUTSFORDS Scottish Country Dance Group began more than 40 years ago with Dr Craigs evening classes at the then secondary modern school.

Mary Crompton continued and, when public funding stopped, moved the group to the Shaw Heath Social Club as an independent group.

Changes there forced them to move again to a tiny space in the Birkin Centre.

But when the WI hall in Branden Drive became available more than 20 years ago members seized the opportunity and have enjoyed their regular Wednesday meetings there ever since.

For the past seven years group members have also held an annual invitation dance for their neighbouring Scottish dancing societies in the main hall of the High School (lower).

New members are always sure of a friendly welcome and September is an ideal time for new starters because members plan the evenings with their needs in mind.

The first hour of less demanding dances will help them towards joining in with more complicated ones that they have in the second hour for those who are more experienced.

The group now has about 40 members but there is always room for more.

Members meet every Wednesday from September 6 until the end of June with brief breaks for Christmas and Easter.

A proper Caledonian regard for economy is shown by the cost of £8 to cover 15 weeks.
