CHESHIRES quarry industry could close within five years with the loss of 830 jobs if government plans are adopted.
The claim came this week from the Quarry Products Association, which is concerned about new noise limits for quarries.
The limits proposed by the Department of Transport would mean by 2004 rural quarries would have to work at noise levels below that of a public library.
These new proposals would devastate the quarrying industry, and make most quarries inoperable, said QPA director general Simon van der Byl.
