DANNY Buxton will make a dash for second place at Oulton Park this weekend after writing off his championship chances.

He only has a maximum 68 points available from the final two rounds of the Elf Clio Renaultsport UK Cup, and lies 61 points behind Jim Edwards Junior.

The Cuddington racer has also lost second place to Henry Taylor following a disastrous spin off the track in the last round at Brand's Hatch, which left him back in seventh.

Buxton, who has more pole positions than any other driver in the series, started the race back in ninth on this occasion after mechanical problems during the qualifying rounds.

Although he managed to regain two places by the time he passed the chequered flag, the 22-year-old had his sights set much higher.

"I'm really disappointed because I should have won," said Buxton. "I'd done all the hard work, I'd caught the leaders, then I spun.

"It was my own mistake and has obviously proved very costly. I'm still only three points behind Taylor so would like to think I can get second place back, but the title looks to be out of reach now."

Buxton recorded the race's fastest lap for the sixth time this season, also more than any other driver this year.

Round 11 of the Elf Clio Cup takes place at Oulton Park this Saturday and Sunday, September 9-10.
