A GRATEFUL Northwich couple have named their little girl after the paramedic who delivered her at her grandparents house.

Sharon Lelonek, of Carlton Road, was on her way to Leighton Hospital with husband Robert to have the baby, when she realised it was too late.

In desperation the couple raced to Sharon's mum's house in Victoria Park.

Paramedics were called, arriving just in time for Nick Bayes to deliver the baby, assisted by Mike Howarth.

Now the Leloneks have named their baby Bethany Nicole, in honour of Nick.

"I can't thank him enough. Although you have people around you, you really rely on the medics. We knew we were in safe hands," said Sharon, 33.

Nick, who is paramedic station officer said: "I'm touched and humbled by this lovely gesture. We were delighted to be of assistance."

The drama began on Wednesday August 30 when Sharon woke up with contractions.

Once they arrived at Sharon's mum's house, in Victoria Park, an operator gave instructions over the phone.

Sharon eventually managed to make it to a spare bedroom where Nick delivered Bethany, a healthy 8lbs 2oz.

Mother and baby were fine so they waited a couple of hours before going home.

The couple, who have another child Alitre, aged eight, want to thank midwife Julie Escourt, who made a special journey from Sandbach to cut the baby's cord and assist after the birth.
