INTREPID teacher Angela Dawe, from Callands, is preparing to pay a visit to Peru to experience the third world at first hand.

The 43-year-old mother-of-two from St Asaph Drive will jet off on November 2 to spend three weeks in a poverty-stricken part of the country with three other teachers from northern England as part of CAFOD's Millennium Awards Scheme.

She will be documenting her visit through photographs with a view to sharing her experiences with her school, St Alban's RC Primary, and the wider community on her return.

During her time there, Angela will take part in excursions like a visit to the country's capital, Lima, and its legendary shanty town areas.

She will also be working with soup kitchens, youth leaders, schools, human rights programmes and environmental projects.

In Chimbote, by the coast, Angela will visit a justice and peace mission, which will be followed by a trip to Cusco, the Inca capital in the south which is some 3,000m high, to take part in a radio congress.

She will also be climbing a 2,500m mountain, partly on horseback, to see how a rural mountain community operates its library system.

Angela said: "It's my first trip to Peru and I can't wait. We've been training for the trip every month for about six months and I've had to have lots of jabs, but I'm really looking forward to it."

Before she flies out, Angela is hoping to collect some gifts to give to the Peruvians as a reminder of her trip.

As a result she has arranged a fundraising disco and cabaret evening at Bank Quay Sports and Social Club on Wednesday, September 13, in a bid to buy football kits, footballs and other souvenirs of Warrington.
