DARRYL Van de Velde's comments after Warrington's heavy home loss to Wigan again pointed to personnel changes during the close season.

In one quote he said: "Some of the players will never make progress because they're not Super League players."

And in another he said: "Our backs just aren't striking as effectively as they should."

Far too often this season Van de Velde has had to face the music after his players have failed to reach his high standards and Sunday was another case in example.

He said: "We lost a few players and lost our way. Wigan are a very good side and out played us in the second half.

"I was proud of the effort in the first half as I thought my players put a lot into it.

"At one stage we held Wigan out for four sets of six tackles but they scored on the next set.

"Two of my players, Danny Nutley and Paul Noone, had done 30 or more tackles in the first half alone and I think with all the tackling we did we burnt up some fuel."

Van de Velde highlighted outstanding performances by Allan Langer, Andrew Gee, Danny Farrar, Danny Nutley and Gee but wished they had received more help from the officials.

When Langer's long pass was scooped up by Gary Connolly for the match-turning try Van de Velde was sure the Great Britian centre was off-side.

Van de Velde said: "What about the eye in the sky, the referee in the stands? Isn't he supposed to be picking up on players shooting up out of the line? It must have happened 10 times.

"I appreciate the referee can't see when they run up from the blind side but surely that's what they've put the referee in the stand for. Obviously we've both been watching a different game."

Wigan coach Frank Endacott also highlighted the outstanding performance of Warrington's double try scorer Langer.

He said: "Langer's kicking game was superb. You can work someone out like Langer but you've still got to stop him.

"He might be getting on in years but the brain is still ticking and the mastery is still there."

But it was not enough to undo Wigan and their stubborn defence. Endacott said: "We're defending reasonably well. The high percentage of tries scored against us are from kicks, like today.

"Our form is pretty good at the moment. We expected a tough first half battle against Warrington and felt that if we could hold them in the first period we would be able to open up in the second half."
