The huge juggernauts regularly pass within three feet of Julie Sloan's door because the stretch of Toft Road where she lives is too narrow.

Ms Sloan, who has lived in her Grade II listed building for 18 months, has now written to the council and police for help to stop her house shaking during rush-hour.

"It is such a dangerous blind spot - a vehicle could come through my front window quite easily," she said.

"I would just like to see some weight and speed restrictions on the road."

Ms Sloan believes the problems, near to Toft Road's junction with Bexton Lane, have been caused by drivers avoiding road repairs on the M6.

Mike Hulme, owner of the Paradise Garage, said there had been a lot of near misses.

"I quite often hear the screech of brakes and look out to see if there has been an accident," he said.

"Up to now people have been lucky - and it is luck that is saving them."

But neither the police or Macclesfield Borough Council could offer much hope this week.

Sergeant Frank Marshall said they would try to enforce the speed restrictions, but could not control the traffic.

"The A50 is the only route we can use when there are problems with the motorway," he said.

"And people have to remember that these are the very same HGVs that supply supermarkets and shops."

Stephen Randall, joint highways manager at the council, also said his options were limited.

"We can make good the damage that has been done, but prevention is a matter for drivers and the police," he said.
