CAROLINE Mosley, Conservative Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Warrington South, is urging the borough council to listen to Penketh and Sankey residents' concerns over a scheme to almost double the size of Arpley tip.

3C Waste has applied to extend the controversial landfill site already the largest in the region by 110 hectares, to accomodate 13.8 million cubic metres of household rubbish.

The scheme would extend the site westward into Norton Marsh, eating up agricultural land including Moss Side Farm and Upper Moss Side Farm.

The scheme is expected to meet with resistance from parish councillors and waste watchdog groups, but objections have not yet been formally lodged.

Caroline believes that the impact of the scheme on the quality of life of people in Penketh and Sankey should be foremost in the minds of councillors when they meet to consider the application.

She said: "Arpley tip is one of the greatest concerns for people living in Penketh and Sankey. People find the smell, the dirt and the lorries very difficult to live with.

"Warrington Borough Council must consult widely and consider local opinion very carefully before it consents to extending both the life and the size of the Arpley landfill site."

She added: "This is a real chance for the council to put people first, and I hope it takes it."

The planning application has been submitted to Warrington Borough Council but has not yet been formally registered.

Thousands of residents in nearby areas such as Penketh, Sankey and Moore are to be consulted on the scheme, which council planning experts say could take up to 12 months to come before the council's development control committee.
