BATTLE plans have been drawn up by environmental watchdogs in Warrington who are hoping to kick up a stink over the Arpley landfill extension plan.

Members of the town's Agenda 21 waste group met on Wednesday night to discuss the finer details of an objection campaign against 3C Waste's two planning applications for the site.

One application involves a 110-hectare expansion and an associated rail link. The other is to extend the opening hours to allow operations on bank holidays and Sundays. The theme of the two-hour meeting was made clear in a statement made by Moor resident Malcolm Dutton, who said: "Enough is enough. We object to Warrington becoming the dumping ground of the North West."

The Agenda 21 Waste group is hoping to launch a provisional batch of 10,000 leaflets in December, outlining their main objections and depending on the strength of that appeal, a further 10,000 could also be produced.

The leaflets will be posted to homes around Penketh, Cuerdley and Great Sankey, sent to schools and handed out around the town centre. A crack team of editors is being assembled to work on the leaflets which could feature a space for individual comments.

The list of objections was drawn up at the meeting based on comments from a variety of residents and community groups. They include the effect on the green belt, Fidlers Ferry Sailing Club and Moore Nature Reserve, the loss of a floodplane and a possible increase in rats, flies, seagulls and odours.

Traffic concerns were also raised and the effect on the Human Rights Act was also highlighted by Clr Linda Dirir.

She said: "I think we have a fundamental right to breath fresh air - but we don't have that right in Penketh and Cuerdley."

A meeting will be held at the town hall on December 14 at 6.30pm to finalise the contents and style of the leaflets.
