A SERIES of agencies are joining forces to warn people of the dangers of borrowing too much money and racking up Christmas debts.
The borough council trading standards department, in association with Warrington Citizens' Advice Bureau (CAB), is working with the Office of Fair Trading to help promote the 'Don't Let Credit Turn Into Debt' campaign.
The aim of the initiative is to warn people of the dangers of debt and give help to those experiencing problems.
An information pack has also been developed, which is available free of charge, to help consumers find the best deals and avoid problems.
Steve Cullen, money adviser at Warrington Citizens' Advice Bureau, said: "People often feel pressure around Christmas to buy expensive presents for families and friends.
"However, the price of a few hours of happiness on Christmas Day often leads to months or years of misery when the actual cost is calculated.
"This year's favourite present, the mobile phone, may also cause potential debt problems especially where our young people enter into "open-ended" contracts.
"Careful budgeting will certainly help most people ensure they have a prosperous new year."
The debt campaign centres on three key areas;
Thinking before taking our credit.
Shopping around
Seeking help if the debt becomes unmanageable.
Anyone worried about meeting their debts should call the CAB on 574538.
