Plans have been submitted to Macclesfield Borough Council to flatten The Village Inn at Pickmere.

But the plan has angered some residents.

"The idea of village life is a few houses and lots of pubs," said Sarah Carson, of Beaver Close.

"Before long there will be no pubs left at all and the village will just be one big housing estate."

On Monday, a barmaid at the pub in Mere Lane declined to comment on the proposals.

"I don't want to answer any questions and I think you should just leave it alone," she said before asking the Knutsford Guardian to leave the premises.

Mrs Carson, 32, has lived in the village all her life and said she remembered when Pickmere was a pleasant place to be.

"When I was a kid we had wonderful times," she said. "Now it has all changed, but not for the better."

Another resident on Beaver Close, who did not want to be named, said the Village Inn was the best pub in Pickmere.

"It is a lovely little pub and it would be a shame to see it go," she said. "But I'm not surprised by the plans.

"My view of the lake has been lost and nearby land has been trashed by the number of housing developments in the village."

Yesterday (Tuesday), the reasons for demolishing the pub remained unclear.

Applicant Mr Lingard from Blackburn was unavailable for comment and his agent, The Bolton Emery Partnership, could find no record of the plans.

The scheme is due to be discussed by Knutsford area planners next month.
