THE hard work of dozens of pensioners and other volunteers has been recognised this week.
The work has gone into the building of a new road leading to Wistaston Sports Ground, The Brittles.
The ground has enjoyed a hugely increased number of users during the last year and desperately needed better access facilities.
The scheme to rebuild the road was started off by a donation from Wistaston Parish Council and Wistaston Sport matched the offer.
There were also a substantial number of private donations which helped fund the new road.
However, the charity did not stop there as community members came forward to help build it.
Local councillor, Eric Swan, provided the technical know how while Houston and Son provided the steel reinforcements and Tarmac Top-mix provided a cut-price concrete.
Free labour was also given by several local residents and councillors who teamed together to get their hands dirty and get the road in place.
The volunteers between them shovelled in 20 tonnes of ballast and 27 cubic metres of concrete and the road was done in double quick time.
There is now easy access from Church Lane in Wistaston to the Brittles and parents using the footpath from St Mary's gate can also use the road to access the nearby school more easily.
The icing on the cake came last week as Crewe and Nantwich Borough Mayor, Cllr Barbara Bickerton visited the 50-metre road and officially opened the Labour of love.
