CALLS to The Samaritans have risen over the Christmas period compared to last year.
Around 592 people from the Northwich, Winsford, Knutsford and Middlewich areas made contact with the organisation between Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.
A spokesman from the charity said people rang for all sorts of different reasons.
"These people are mainly lonely, frightened or missing people but we can't generalise," she said.
The spokesman said calls were predominantly from men who bottle things up and find it more difficult to talk.
"We want to encourage particularly young men to call us," she said.
Meanwhile she revealed that there is at least one homeless person in Northwich who visits the centre every day.
"I expect people in Northwich wouldn't believe there are homeless people - but there are," she said.
