David Gill
The year 2000 saw David and the England team successfully defend their World Indoor 560 kilo gold medal in Holland.
In the World Outdoor Championships David and his England team took second place after a closely fought final with Switzerland.
And to complete his England hat-trick David, who is a sub officer at Birchwood Fire Station, won gold in the 600 kilo class of the UK Indoor Championships.
The 43-year-old from Stockton Heath achieved a personal goal by winning with his Manchester club the AAAs Indoor Championships at 640 kilo, completing the career accolade of having won a gold medal at every major championship at home and abroad in the sport of tug o'war.
Gold medals were also won with his club in the National Indoor Championships at 600 and 560 kilos and in the National League Championships at 600 kilos. In the League Championships he also gained bronze at 640 kilos and 680 kilos and bronze was won at the National Outdoor Championships at 720 kilos and if Tug O' War becomes an Olympic sport in time for Athens David hopes to be there.
Mark Forster
MAKING appearances for Warrington Wolves in his 20th season with the club led to Mark Forster becoming a World Cup quarter-finalist.
Rugby League winger Mark Forster scored the try of the match for Ireland in a group game against New Zealand Maoris, helping his country to the World Cup last eight stage where their hopes were dashed by England.
Foz, enjoying a double Testimonial with the Wolves at the age of 35, clocked up his 442nd appearance for the club with the final game of the Super League VI season. His five touch downs in 14 games took his career try tally up to 191 - making him the Wolves' fourth highest try scorer of all time.
Mark was a Challenge Cup semi-finalist with Warrington but the team missed out on the final with a defeat to Bradford Bulls.
Mark has never forgotten his roots and in 2000 continued to make himself available to make presentations on club nights in support of the amateur game.
Lee Briers
MOVED to stand off to make way for Warrington Wolves' new skipper Allan Langer and enjoyed a record season.
The 14 goals from 14 attempts he kicked against York Wasps in the Silk Cut Challenge Cup, plus the first hat-trick of tries in his career, handed him a club record of 40 points for one game. Not surprisingly, he was also man of the match.
Briers was a Challenge Cup semi-finalist with Warrington but the team missed out on the final with a defeat to Bradford Bulls.
He broke his own records with 17 tries in the Challenge Cup and Super League season. In fact it was more tries than in his three previous Wolves seasons put together.
His 93 goals was a record for one year for Lee and with the one drop goal he kicked it brought a personal record in one season of 255pts.
He took his form into the World Cup with Wales, despite switching to the scrum half position. Three times in the tournament he scored tries deemed to be the best in a game.
Lee became a World Cup semi-finalist with Wales and scored an opportunist try and two drop goals as his side took a 20-6 lead against the holders and eventual world champions Australia.
Phil Knowles
An athlete who recorded the highlight of his career so far at the start of the new millennium.
Phil competed in the European Veterans Championships in Finland and returned home to Birchwood with two gold medals.
The 41-year-old, in his first year of veterans' athletics, recorded his best time to win the 400m in 50.68 seconds.
He also ran the final leg of the 400m relay for the victorious Great Britain team.
To cap it all off, Phil's successes helped the Great Britain team to overall third spot.
Birchwood Parish Council has been backing Phil's successes and presented him with a silver plaque to commemorate his Helsinki successes.
During the year Phil also became Northern Veterans' champion at 400m and was runner-up in the British Veterans' Championships.
Jane Banks
Back row forward Jane was voted player of the series for Great Britain in November's inaugural World Series.
Jane and her team finished as world runners-up after losing to New Zealand in a tense final at Wilderspool Stadium.
Much of the 2000/2001 season was put on hold for the World Series but fitness fanatic Jane ended last term in great style.
The 22-year-old postwoman was voted, after a terrific defensive display, player of the match as her club Hindley Pumas ended the 10-year Challenge Cup reign of Wakefield Panthers.
There were numerous other player of the match performances during the season and at the end of year awards for her club Jane, a Warrington Wolves supporter, was handed the top tackler trophy.
