AN ANTROBUS couple who set up their own charity to deal with poverty-stricken families in Georgia are appealing to Northwich Guardian readers for help.
When John Corlett first visited the former Russian republic five years ago as an agricultural consultant with the British Executive Services Overseas, he was so appalled by what he saw there that he decided something had to be done.
And with the help of his wife Joy and neighbour Dr Eric Howarth, they launched the Georgian Social Relief Fund just over a year ago in a bid to support families living in the troubled state, which lies on the eastern side of the Black Sea.
"Things have got steadily worse over the years and it's very hard to imagine just how desperate people are over there," said John, who lives in Knutsford Road.
"The vast majority of people are in poverty and it is absolutely awful."
Now, following his latest visit to Georgia to help set up the distribution of 30,000 shoe boxes to children, John is appealing to readers for their support.
The couple have 20 poor families which they are trying to help, but would like the number to be higher as there is a waiting list.
By sponsoring a family for just £8 a month, you will be able to provide children and their parents with basic provisions to help boost what little they have.
John added: "There is little money for food or drugs in hospitals and for some people it's become a matter of life or death."
