But piecing together her identity from a collection of images from the 80s may be difficult.

The Knutsford Guardian tried to unravel the mystery after a bag of hundreds of colour photographs was left at our reception.

The pictures had been taken out of an album auctioned at Marshalls' showrooms, but the new owner felt the amount - and range - of the photographs warranted an appeal to trace the real owner.

The mystery woman caught on camera is something of a traveller.

There are shots of in South Africa, Cyprus and Edinburgh.

On face value, she seems to count craft fairs, flower-arranging and aviation among hobbies.

On a hand-crafted birthday cake, a model aeroplane sits alongside the cryptic iced lettering, Happy Birthday Beverley 'Heavy Metal'.

It could be an indication of a promising aviation career or maybe a passion for the Iron Maidens of this world.

Many of the photographs depict 'Beverley's' graduation from, what looks like, Manchester University.

Her closest companion appears to be a King Charles spaniel, who may even have enjoyed a spell on TV with former Generation Game host Isla St Clair and Jeremy Beadle.

On Monday, Adam Partridge, auctioneer at Marshalls' showrooms, said it was not uncommon to find photographs among items sold at auction.

"It is quite amazing the things we find," he said. "Old photographs have even been found inside pieces of furniture and we get a lot of false teeth."

But Mr Partridge said he did not hold out much hope of finding the girl.

"We sell off items from as far as Buxton and a radius all around Knutsford," he said. "We wouldn't know where to start."
