POLICE have praised the actions of a Winsford pensioner who foiled a would-be burglar posing as a council worker.

The 74-year-old woman answered the door of her home, in Cherry Crescent, to a woman claiming to be from the council who said she had come to check the heating.

But when she failed to show any identification, the pensioner slammed the door in her face and contacted the police.

Detective Sergeant John Maddock said: "I would like to praise the occupant for her quick thinking action, which undoubtedly saved her from becoming a victim of crime.

"She responded correctly and I hope others will take notice of her actions and do the same if they are unfortunate enough to be targeted by a bogus caller."

The incident happened just before midday on Wednesday, January 3, and follows a catalogue of similar bogus council callers in recent weeks.

A spokesman for Vale Royal Borough Council said: "All council officials carry an identity card with their name, occupation and a photo of themselves.

"If this is not produced when asked for, the matter should be reported to the police or council immediately. If you have any concerns ring the council free on 0800 0852493."

Police would like to hear from anyone who has been similarly approached, or who saw anything suspicious.

The woman is described as white, 5ft 6in, in her mid 50's with brown hair. She was wearing a lot of make up and carrying a shabby handbag.

She fled the scene in a dirty car driven by a man. Anyone with any information should contact Winsford police on 01606 592222.
