MID Cheshire bowlers could be competing at British Parks championships for the last time in 2001.
The financial implications of entering the prestigious national events will be considered at the end of the year before a decision is made whether to continue into 2002.
Questions were raised as to the viability of carrying on in British Parks at the Mid Cheshire Bowling Association's Annual General Meeting at Winnington Park on Friday.
If Mid Cheshire pulled out, it would be a severe blow to the proud record of tomorrow's crown green stars, the juniors, who won the British Parks county championship in 2000.
The 12 bowlers in that team also made up one half of the Cheshire side which won the Drake's Pride British title to complete a unique double.
Association secretary George Horwill said: "It all depends what happens this year. It's very expensive to stay in the British Parks but we're hoping to because, as I said at the meeting, it's our juniors that will lose out.
"They did the double last year and I'd hate to see them miss the chance to do that sort of thing again. It's also good for the veterans to play in."
Good news for the bowlers came with the continued support of major sponsors, including the Guardian, whose name will be on Mid Cheshire's biggest individual prize again in 2001.
Brunner Mond has withdrawn its sponsorship of the Challenge Trophy, Alex Anderson bookmakers being the new sponsor of this event.
Beech Tree, Barnton will sponsor the Cowley Cup and S&F Flooring have lent their support to one of the team competitions.
After a lively debate members at the meeting accepted the new no smoking on the greens rule by a small majority, while Hazel Pear, Lostock C and Shavington were formerly accepted and Hop Pole voted in as a new club.
A PRE season meeting will be held at Winnington Park on Thursday, March 22 and a race night with a casino has been arranged for Saturday, February 2 at Wharton Cons (7.30pm).
