Weaverham Rangers RLFC 22
Parr Hare & Hounds 10
RANGERS overcame a below par team performance thanks to the superb individual efforts of man of the match Mark Phoenix, John Millington and Rob Jones.
Despite a five week lay-off Rangers started brightly against Parr and took the lead after a minute when Jones dummied past his opposite centre.
After taking the ball on for 40 metres he fed full back Steve Lowe, who sent Phoenix over in the corner. Roger Pickering added the extra points.
Jones played a large part in Rangers' second try when he again turned his opposite number inside out and sent skipper Mark Bebbington racing towards the line. After he was held up just short, Millington made a well timed run to go unopposed under the posts. Pickering converted.
For 20 minutes either side of half-time Rangers put in an undisciplined performance containing handling errors and the concession of needless penalties.
This led to two Parr tries, one converted, to give them a scent of victory. However, 12-10 down with 20 minutes left, they missed a penalty to level the scores and Rangers hit back to dominate the remainder of the game.
Phoenix scored his second of the game after being found by Millington at the end of a flowing move, cutting in from the wing to score between the posts.
Fittingly, Millington scored the final try in the dying minutes, touching down in the corner after being found by Pickering, who added the conversion for a final score of 22-10.
Rangers visit Halton Hornets this Saturday.
