THERE could be a shock contender for the Warrington North seat at the next General Election.
Warrington Wolves fans on the club's website are pushing for team mascot Wolfie to stand for the post - and they are hoping he will be up against current MP Helen Jones, who has not been supporting the Wolves' new stadium bid.
To make a point to the Government that the Warrington community is backing the Wolves' new stadium, Wolfie could expect to receive thousands of votes from Wolves fans living north of the Manchester Ship Canal.
There is nothing new in the concept - Leeds Rhinos' Ronnie put himself up for election last time round.
Norman Summers, chairman of the Wolves' owners Warrington Sports Holdings Ltd., was told of the proposal.
He said he thought it was a wonderful idea. Mr Summers added tongue-in-cheek that although he would not like to see Wolfie taking it as far as defeating the nominated Labour candidate for the election, on the assumption that Helen Jones is reselected, he said he would consider it as a good sign of democracy in action."
