TWO Priestley College students are preparing for the adventure of a lifetime overseas.
Martyn Rowlands, who is studying A-levels in English literature, history and law, has been selected for a placement teaching English as a foreign language at a monastery in Dhera Dun in India, while Rebecca Brewer will teach young girls English in Japan.
Both are taking part in the GAP scheme, which organises employment abroad for students who want to take a year out before going to university.
Following the completion of his six-month placement starting in September, Martyn hopes to travel in India and Europe before returning to England to study philosophy at university.
"I hope to experience different cultures and grow in confidence," he said.
Martyn says his involvement in sports such as basketball and hockey will prepare him for the level of fitness which is needed for his trip.
Rebecca, from Woolston, is studying A-levels in Spanish, German, geography and law. She has gained the only available teaching placement available in Japan.
She will live between Osaka and Kobe and teach at an all girls school for 900 pupils between the ages of 11 and 18. To prepare for her placement, Rebecca will teach herself some Japanese.
"I hope to pick up experience through taking part in the GAP programme and travel as much as I can," said Rebecca, who hopes to study Japanese at university.
