WARRINGTON South MP Helen Southworth has welcomed a Government push to crack down on drink-related crime and disorder.
New measures in the Queen's speech included police powers to immediately close licensed premises where disorder is occurring, plus more effective powers for the police and councils to ban on-street drinking.
The police will also have the power to issue fixed penalty notices for abusive behaviour, being drunk and disorderly, and causing criminal damage, and to ensure the regulation of bouncers and doormen.
Mrs Southworth said: "Local people should be able to walk safely in the town centre without being intimidated by gangs of youths.
"Too many people worry about going into Warrington town centre on a Friday or Saturday night because of a drunken minority. We have to tackle this anti-social behaviour.
"We are also cracking down on car crime and will also bring in a new law to seize assets of drug traffickers, who peddle misery for families."
