MIDDLEWICH'S most famous football competition is set for a revival next year.

Billie Law is spearheading a new committee trying to bring back the Bricker Cup, which has involved pub and club teams from the town since 1913.

Her team, King's Lock, were the last winners of the historic trophy before it folded in 1997.

"I was talking to one of the regulars here who played in the winning team of 1953-54, and we were saying that as it's been going for 85 years it's a shame to let it go," said Billie.

"As I love football I saw it as an ideal opportunity to get involved and promote it again.

"I'd like to think we'd not only get football teams and pubs, but factories and firms, anybody that might show an interest.

"We attempted to run it again two years ago but there wasn't a lot of enthusiasm because of the rules.

"I think it used to be restricted to places with sport and social clubs, but hopefully we can get anyone with a collective of people who want to play.

"We need to get a committee together, but at the moment, it's just me.

The Bricker Cup began in 1913, named after Colonel Bricker, the King's Arms landlord who donated the trophy.

More than 500 fans would regularly attend the final, usually held at Middlewich Town.

Billie also wants people to donate old photographs and Bricker Cup memorabilia to help to promote its comeback.

She added: "Everybody in Middlewich over the age of 15 must know someone or have a relative who has played in it.

"But age doesn't matter, I'm looking for anyone who wants to get involved in helping to run it. Any ideas would be useful."
