WINSFORD could soon see the last of its eyesore gas tower, in High Street, as Transco is considering demolition.
A Transco spokesman said: "We are now investigating the structure to see whether it should be demolished or if it can be repaired.
"We now have other innovations in storing gas and we do not necessarily need all of our gas storage holders."
The gas storage tower was built in 1956, and has a capacity of 500,000 cubic feet of gas, but has not been in use since 1997.
Clr Tony Hooton, of Winsford Town Council, welcomed the possibility that Winsford might be seeing the last of the huge container.
He said: "It is good news. I think we should encourage Transco to get rid of it once and for all.
"I have always thought it is an eyesore in the bottom of Winsford. It has been derelict for quite long enough so lets have something else, for example the land would make a lovely extension to the park."
However, Transco wants the gas supply system to come first and the spokesman added that some towers are placed strategically to cope with demand.
He added: "The impact of such structures is unpopular nationwide but we have to keep gas supplies flowing and we would probably not be swayed by public opinion."
