RESIDENTS are to be invited to a public meeting to air their views on plans to create a new home for Congleton Rugby Club.

The club wants to move to playing fields off Back Lane, West Heath, from its current base in Park Street.

Club leaders were initially looking at continuing to use pitches at Hankinson's Field and Congleton Park, and a third pitch off Back Lane.

Under the plans the clubhouse would have moved from Park Street to a new base alongside the main pitches via an extension to Congleton Leisure Centre.

However a number of problems have arisen with the proposed relocation to the leisure centre.

In addition Congleton Town Football Club has decided to remain at its Booth Street ground after plans to move to Back Lane were scrapped.

As a result the rugby club is now seeking a new home on the playing fields.

The club said it was aware of the possible concerns of local residents, who were opposed to the proposed relocation of the football club.

However club leaders said the clubs were different in terms of their community involvement, and the rugby club would need less space for spectators.

The club is also willing to involve local residents in the proposals to come up with a scheme acceptable to both sides.

A public meeting looking at the rugby proposals is due to be held before Easter, and the council is to consult with other user of the playing fields about the plans.
