VICTIMS of domestic violence in Warrington are losing a lifeline because of money troubles.

Warrington Domestic Violence Forum has announced it is closing its support centre because it does not have the funding to pay for a manager.

The centre, based in Palmyra Square, was launched in May of last year and managed to cope up until the start of this year.

But, despite having no problems managing the finances, the group did have problems managing an overwhelming need.

The efforts of volunteers and the centre's single paid member of staff, though exceptional, were not enough to cope with all of the cases.

In an emotional letter, forum chairwoman Joan Harpin, says: "Despite the excellent volunteers, who all underwent an in-depth training programme with us, we cannot continue to meet the flood of those needing help. We are engulfed.

"We desperately need to find some funding for a manager to organise and oversee the volunteers.

"Our co-ordinator cannot be expected to perform this role and carry out all her other work which she does tirelessly and very well.

"These volunteers have met with all classes, creeds, ages and disabilities in their work. Domestic violence is no respecter of any boundaries - it affects the whole of Warrington.

"We believe in providing a quality service and those agencies that refer those needing help to us should understand this. We are hoping to re-open once we have adequate funding and are making every effort for ourselves."

Anyone interested in helping raise funds for the centre can call Joan on 729021.
