ALTHOUGH the rugby club is in financial trouble, it should not be up to the ratepayers to foot the bill.
As your article pointed out, if a third of the town's people donated £10 then the club would continue for another year. During that time hopefully something can be worked out to secure the long term future of the club (using private money).
It is also wrong to assume that everyone supports the concept of a new stadium.
Why does this town need a stadium for 40,000 when only a fraction of that show up for games these days? Also remember that along with a new stadium, comes higher tickets prices required to pay the debt off. Are the public going to pay those prices while the team continue to under perform?
I'd rather see ratepayers' money going towards things like more police, better street lighting, better roads, improved bus service and town centre development.Remember the grand ideas to have outside eateries down Bridge Street, whatever happened to that?
I wish the club and its supporters well, but we should look towards other means of saving the club.
