ACE father and son double act Peter and Gary Makin have reached the national finals of one of the country's top amateur tennis events.

The Middlewich pair have smashed their way to the final of the Hertz Cup, for which they will travel to Torquay this weekend.

Peter, 45, and Gary, 17, of Hilton Close, both play for Crewe Rolls Royce and made their way through two stages of a round robin event to qualify.

The early stages of this competition are arranged by the players themselves, but when it comes to the national final, the draw is likely to throw up some surprises.

"We're down to the last four but we don't know who we're going to play, but that's the beauty of it," said Peter.

"The matches we have played so far have been quite tight and one or two things have gone our way. We play well on the big points and they're the important ones you've go to win.

"We were 4-2 down in the third set of one of the games and won 6-4, so that was a good result.

"I like to think we're quite consistent. We play a lot of big hitters who hit 100 mile an hour serves while we try to keep rallies going, wait for the chances and take them."

Gary is seeded number one at Sir John Deane's College and this is the first full tournament he and his dad have teamed up for.

Peter added: "He's done well and won one or two junior things, but this is just experience. It's a way of coaching while being able to play matches at the same time."
