WINSFORD residents may be wondering what has happened to the monument of stone blocks in Weaver Valley Park.

The blocks formed a landmark in Winsford and were visible from as far out as the Winsford to Northwich by-pass.

The sandstone blocks were originally from the salt works and acted as a reminder of the town's heritage when they were retained and made into a monument around 20 years ago.

Many readers rang in or wrote to the Guardian when they saw the monument had been taken down.

Most were worried that the blocks might be gone for good.

Thankfully, although they will not be in the same form, memories of the salt industry will remain in Weaver Valley Park in the form of seating.

A Cheshire County Council spokesman said: "These were former mounting blocks from the salt and chemical industries piled into a shape on a temporary basis.

"They have now been taken away and will be made into seats in Weaver Valley Park and are going to be carved with themes from local industry."
