IN spite of efforts to arrange a pool fixture Northwich 1st XV had no match last Saturday.

Northwich had been keen to get a run out following the improved performance the previous week that saw the team lift themselves well out of the relegation zone.

The seconds travelled to Congleton and recorded a comfortable 44-17 win while the third XV match was cancelled at noon when pitches at Moss Farm were still frozen.

On Saturday Northwich return to league action with a tough fixture at title-chasing Birkenhead Park.

With tow wins under their belt form the earlier league fixture and the Cheshire Cup tie played under Winnington Park's floodlights, the Wirral team will be confident.

Nevertheless Northwich will take heart from their spirited performance in the cup match, when apart from a 20 minute spell either side of half time, they were always in contention.

Northwich hope to be at full strength with Charles Wood now recovered from a back injury and Phil Ayres available following a neck problem.

Dean Thompson expects to be fit after missing the last match with a knee injury and is likely to return at number eight.
