Winnington Park 49 Oldershaw 6
WINNINGTON RUFC evevtually overwhelmed their opposition at Burrows Hill on Sunday, scoring six tries to nil with a hat-trick from left winger Carl Patterson.
The game against the South Lancashire and Cheshire League team was won with two periods of dominant play by Park.
These periods came in the first and last quarters of the match.
In between the game was mainly uneventful with the visitors from the Wirral gaining some territorial advantage.
The stage was set when Paul McCafferty made a good early break.
This was followed by a similar decisive move from Ben Barton, who sliced through the Oldershaw defence before switching a pass inside for Carl Patterson to break two tackles and score.
Captain Gary Bell converted for the first of eight successful goal kicks.
His first penalty was followed quickly by Patterson's second try. This score came as a result of a series of well timed passes and its conversion put Winnington 17-0 in the lead.
The home side continued to press but the loss of McCafferty with an injury and a successful penalty from Oldershaw's Gardiner made the game a bit more competitive.
For long periods of the second half Winnington seemed to lose interest and with a quarter of an hour to go Park led 30-6.
In the last period of play Park scored three more tries.
From a well won line-out the ball was switched inside to Patterson who again wrong footed the defence by passing inside to Phil Beswick to score unopposed. Then a good forward run from Richard Smith led to Ben Barton scoring under the posts.
Winnington's now dominant backs fed Carl Patterson for the final core and his third touch-down.
