COMMUNITY leaders in Great Sankey are striving to start up a village carnival to help inject some community spirit into the district.
Great Sankey Parish Council has been speaking to residents to find out what they would like and found it was an event that people wanted to see resurrected.
It has been about 20 years since the last annual carnival took place and the plans are to make it bigger and better than ever and include a rose queen ceremony.
"We are aware of the lack of community spirit and we want to change that," said ward and parish Clr Jan Davidson.
"Many years ago we used to have a carnival and all the local children would make floats and dress up. Many community groups such as the football teams would get involved.
"We think it would be a great thing to get all this going again."
The idea is at an early stage but the parish council is also talking of including a fair.
Parish councillors will now begin a series of fundraising events for the venture around the local community centres. Details of these events will appear in the GUARDIAN.
