UNION bosses are demanding urgent talks with phone giants BT over the threat of job losses caused by changes to Warrington's massive call centre.
The Communication Workers Union (CWU) has made the demand following the company's announcement of a major review to its 150 (inquiry) services.
Under the company's rationalisation proposals, the total number of inquiry call centres in the UK would initially fall from 34 to 30.
Sites at threat include centres in North London, Croydon, Oxford and Glasgow.
The work from these would be transferred to Warrington's call centre, which would in turn have its telemarketing workload transferred to a Glasgow site a conversion planned for completion by August of this year.
Jeannie Drake, CWU deputy general secretary, said: "The CWU is very concerned at the implications of these proposals for the employees concerned and is pressing for urgent negotiations with the company.
"We are seeking a full explanation of the rationale behind the decision and assurances on a range of issues including the requirement that individuals will be retained in quality jobs."
