A SWIMMING pool for the people of Middlewich has moved a step closer - but plans have had to change dramatically.
Jokaro, the company masterminding the development, submitted two planning applications for housing and a leisure centre and supermarket.
But Cheshire County Council became a stumbling block when it recommended the applications were refused amid concerns that the impact on traffic and retail had not been fully assessed.
After extensive research by independent consultants, Jokaro has re-submitted amended applications.
And there are several big changes.
The supermarket will be only a third of the original size at 15,000sq ft with the extra space being used for 109 houses as opposed to 86.
And the swimming pool will be reduced to 20 metres instead of the planned 25 metres.
Jokaro's managing director Nigel West said: "These measures are in reaction to the traffic and retail studies and are in keeping with the size of the town.
"We are confident now that there will be no objections from the borough council or the residents.
"We are still offering a large portion of funding toward the swimming pool and hopefully these amendments will be the kick start that the project needs."
Town councillors met with representatives from Jokaro to discuss the new plans.
Town clerk Jonathan Williams said: "We had a brief meeting to express our views on the lack of progress and we will consider the amended plans at the next town council meeting."
The meeting is on Monday, March 19, at 7.15pm and members of the public are welcome to attend at the council offices, Victoria Building, Lewin Street.
