Saturday, March 10

WINNINGTON Park's director of rugby Chris Gleave was ecstatic as his side continued their sparkling form in fine style over Aldwinians.

He said: "This must rank as our best team performance for at least two years. Tactically, we got it right and our defence was excellent."

Gary Bell led the way with a personal tally of 26 points from two tries, two conversions and four penalties, although Gleave gave man of the match to Phil Beswick for his tackling.

Bell kicked an early penalty before exchanging passes with Carl Patterson to go over for his first try. Although he couldn't add the extra points on this occasion, he made no mistake with the conversion to the next score.

This came on the half hour when the ball passed through many pairs of hands before finding its way to Simon Newell, who grounded in the corner. Bell's extra points gave Park a 15-0 half-time lead.

Aldwinians came back into the game early in the second half with a Woodward try converted by Leyden, who reduced the arrears to five points with a penalty.

But most of the last quarter was played in the Aldwinians half, Bell adding three further penalties before the visitors were reduced to 10 men with Jackson's sin binning.

In injury time the result was wrapped up when James Kora intercepted and fed Phil Sharples, whose kick was perfectly placed for Bell to score under the posts.

This Saturday Widnes, who finally got their first win of the season at the weekend, are Park's hosts (3pm).

A TURTON try and two penalties from Hill weren't enough to prevent Park 2nds going down 30-11 at Aldwinians 2nds.

MATT Thurwell's penalty was all Park under-17s had to show for their efforts at Chester, going down 10-3 in a tight match.

The under-16s scored the try of the match at Oldershaw through Rick Cheesborough to lead 10-8 at half-time.

However, although they had their strong front row of Will Burgess, Gavin Venter and Rick Hutchinson for once, they couldn't prevent the home side storming back to win 30-10.

Despite having five players away on county duty, the under-15s disposed of Orrell 59-0. Scorers were Adam Basnett (2), Sam Kirkpatrick (2), Simon Jennions (2), Sam Brookes, Ramon Moetamedi and Mike Breen, who converted seven of their nine tries.

A hat-trick by David Cross helped the under-14s beat Oldershaw 36-7 at home. Dave Randall, Mike Hannah and Jon Sweeney scored the others, John Woodger converted three.

Oldershaw were also the visitors at under-13 level, Park winning 26-10. David Burchell scored a hat-trick, Robert Stagg got another and Chris Bentley converted three.

The under-12s age group an downwards had Cheshire Cup matches scheduled, but the foot and mouth crisis put paid to them.
