Congleton Town 1 Winsford United 2

AFTER looking like relegation candidates just a week ago, Winsford United have propelled themselves to 13th in UniBond Division One following victory over Congleton on Tuesday.

United's rock bottom Cheshire neighbours looked to be heading for a shock win as they led at half-time, but two goals early in the second half turned things around.

Player manager Steve Shaughnessy watched his side record their second away win of the week from the sidelines after limping off in the 11th minute.

He had a recurrence of his hamstring injury, but had already gone close to scoring when he blasted a good chance over the bar inside the first minute.

Town took the lead in the 34th minute. A free-kick by Ian Herron found Paul Bowyer at the far post and the full back headed past David Pierce.

Shaughnessy's viewing from the touchline must have filled him with plenty to say in the dressing room at half-time, because his Winsford side emerged for the second half like greyhounds from the traps.

Within seven minutes they were 2-1 up. Mike Scully made it 1-1 in the 49th minute when he latched on to Andy Burns' long ball, rouded Kevin Taylor and slotted into the empty net.

Three minutes after this, new boy Adrian Riley sent Danny Worthington away and the top scorer applied the finish for his 16th goal of the season.

The match ended on something of a low note for Blues when Chris Pollitt was sent off for two bookable offences in the space of three minutes.
