A BIG-hearted charity group in Warrington has struck upon a novel idea for raising cash to bring disadvantaged children over from Tenerife.
Warrington Lions has collected more than 500 personally signed books from household names and celebrities like Sterling Moss and Edward Heath.
The group auctions the books, which range from biographies to novels, to raise money to bring abused children over from a home in Tenerife to stay in Warrington.
Among the collection are some real gems including a book from Barbara Cartland which she signed just a fortnight before her death.
Even Stephen Hawkings has supported the cause by sending a book with a certified thumb-print.
Rex Mallet, Lions member and former president, said: "It all started when we took a group of Downs syndrome children from Warrington to Tenerife for a holiday and to give their parents some respite care.
"While I was out there, I found out about a home for abused children and tried to arrange for them to come to Warrington.
"At first the Spanish authorities were not sure, but after some talking we managed to make the necessary arrangements and they have been coming over for four years now."
Despite their initial apprehension, the Spanish authorities have been so grateful for the efforts of the Lions that they have presented the group with a plaque.
The next visit is planned for September and as many as 35 youngsters could be taking part. On average, each trip costs around £10,000 and the books have gone a long way to cover costs.
