SUPERMARKET giant Tesco is calling on the whole community to get behind its store and stadium bid.

Bosses at the company say it is vitally important that the Government is aware of what a massive positive impact the development on the former Tetley brewery site in Winwick Road will have on the town.

The public inquiry is due to start on Tuesday, May 15, and while those involved prepare to put all their energies into moving the planning process forward, Tesco say everyone should to show the inspector how they feel about the proposals.

If the stadium and Tesco Extra store are not given the go-ahead, it leaves the Wolves on shaky ground. Already in financial difficulties, the club needs the investment the new stadium would attract.

As reported in last week's Guardian, Tesco is hoping to confirm its part in a three-way loan to the club, along with the borough council and principle sponsor Carlsberg Tetley.

But while the details are being finalised, Tesco's communications manager Martyn Vennings is urging everyone in Warrington to get on board.

"From our point of view we want to show decision makers outside Warrington that this is something the whole community can get behind," he said.

"There is clear evidence that the supporters of the club and the community at large are supportive of the campaign and we are now calling on the business community to get behind the campaign as well.

"I really don't believe the importance of this planning application has been made sufficiently clear to those in Government. We need to make sure everything is being done to tell the Government how the town feels."
