PLANS to erect a giant sculpture at Birchwood's M62 junction have been formally lodged with the borough council.
As revealed exclusively in the Guardian, Encounter is a 24 metres high piece of artwork designed by Stephen Broadbent - who created Bridge Street's River of Life.
Organised and funded by the Birchwood Forum business community, it is hoped Encounter will form a gateway to the town and become as famous as Gateshead's Angel of the North.
The proposals are now under discussion by the council's development control department.
