FORTUNATELY since last week there have been no further Lymm Angling Club water closures and hopefully this will remain the case until the situation improves, allowing closed waters to be opened.

Unfortunately it cannot be forecasted when closed waters will be opened, such is the nature of the foot and mouth problem.

Luckily the waters currently open are now showing some good form. Ray Boden reports an upsurge of roach action on the Sankey Canal, which has resulted in him reaching double figure catches each time he has settled for a couple of hours of early spring action.

Likewise on Grimsditch Mill Pool, action from the skimmers has markedly improved since the thaw of last week. Member, Graham Helsby demonstrated this last Wednesday by landing a stream of decent fish using tip tactics.

Lymm Dam is another water improving as the days grow longer and the ambient temperatures increase. Bream, roach and perch are already obliging members and none members alike, as are the good head of pike this picturesque water holds. As in previous years, no doubt carp action will become more and more dominant as the year proceeds.

It is in these situations, with many waters closed, when members may discover the delights of Longbarn Pool. This is a beautiful set water on Longbarn Park. Officials Dave Sheridan, Bill Stewardson and Don Suker demonstrate, on a regular basis, the wonders of this water by landing some cracking carp, some of which are over 20lb. Bream in this water go to 7lb, with plenty of silver fish to provide action between specimens. Pike are another species who make their presence known on a very regular basis.

All the afore mentioned waters are day ticket venues, therefore all responsible anglers are welcomed there, to share with our members some local and good fishing.

Sue Jupp had a storming session on Spring Pool last Friday, landing perch to 10 ounces and a pristine golden orfe of three pounds. All her fish were caught using worms as bait. Strangely, she had the water to herself, whereas on nearby Village Pool it was a full house.

Members who will have visited Village and Statham Pool would have noticed the vast amounts of work undertaken on them. Access to some of the pegs on Village Pool has had to be re-routed due to the increased water levels.

Please note that as from today (Thursday) Village, New and Statham Pools will be closed to all but holder of a gold overstamps.

The next work party takes place next Saturday, with participants meeting on Whitley car part at 9am.
