Woolston Rovers...12
Leigh MR...16
ROVERS missed out on the opportunity to move back to the top of the National Conference League Premier Division.
The visitors opened the scoring in the 33rd minute and a penalty conversion gave Leigh an 8-0 half-time lead.
Rovers hit back in the first minute of the second half when hooker Phil Dermott and stand off Nigel Quarmby combined superbly down the blind side to send substitute Jon Cole racing 50 yards to score
Miners' prop Danny Flannery forced his way over from acting half back to restore their eight-point advantage.
On the hour, Rovers again hit back when a great break from Quarmby split the Miners defence and he drew the full back before finding Cole in support to outpace the cover and go over for his second try. Mark Wallington converted to reduce the deficit to two points.
Miners pulled away again when Steve Clarke got his second.
Seven minutes from time Rovers prop Graham Muckalt broke away, kicked the ball over the full back and as he ran passed him, was cynically dragged down and despite the fact Muckalt would have scored the referee only sin-binned Irwin and awarded a penalty to Rovers instead of a penalty try.
Wallington kicked the penalty to reduce the gap to four points and twice substitute Dave Patterson was held up on his back over the line in the last three minutes.
The man of the match was Rovers substitute Cole.
On Saturday Rovers are away to Thornhill Trojans in the National Conference League Premier Division.
